Color and light are the strongest guides and inspiration for the ceramic art I make on the potter’s wheel and build by hand. The wheel thrown and hand built functional pottery that I make from red, earthenware clay is decorated using a layering technique combining slips, underglazes and paper stencils. Layering color with wide brush strokes allows me to create movement and texture as I build up the narrative stories. I am greatly influenced by folktales, fairy tales and world mythology. I also mix up a white earthenware body and stain the earthenware clay with Mason Stain colors. With this clay, I roll the colored clays into slabs and build wall sculpture, plates and platters that have an abstract, landscape quality.
