I crafted my first Nantucket Lightship Basket in 2012.The historic significance of the Nantucket Basket was intriguing and I longed to replicate the form, harmony and function inherent in this little basket. From its connection to rugged sailors and the hardy Nantucketer who prized the basket for its myriad uses and sturdiness, to the collector of today, the Nantucket holds a fascination for me. My baskets are woven employing traditional tools. Cane (rattan), and various species of wood chosen for the bases, rims, ribs, handles and lids comprise my mold woven Nantucket basket. I am excited to perpetuate the legacy of the Nantucket Lightship sailors, who in the 1830's constructed sturdy, functional baskets for friends and loved ones at home. I have begun a journey that I am hopeful will produce many heirloom works of art, and help keep the spirit of the Nantucket sailor alive.
