Ash, smoke, heat and other random events result in beauty on clay. For me, raku and wood firing are two of the most exciting processes in ceramics. Starting with a hollow core, I create animals incorporating the same basic sculptural features, i.e. eyebrows, shoulders, hips, etc. Their sweet personalities and patterned “hides” are wonders! The idea of bowls with feet is not new. The iconic Egyptian footed bowl resides in a New York museum. My footed bowls are created from stoneware clay slabs and handbuilt. They are thematically based on interpretations of popular footwear designs or well known characters. This is the impetus for these whimsical bowls as they become beloved personalities. They express attitude without a face. They can be functional, holding practical things, yet quirky. They can be customized so anyone can have their unique footed bowl.
