I have been weaving for over 40 years. For this show, all of my scarves are handwoven on a 12 harness floor loom. I specialize in using very fine silk, bamboo, lyocell, and this year, cashmere yarns. Such fine yarns enhance the drape and soft feel of each scarf, which is then double hem-stitched at the ends, giving it a finished look that is elegant and clean. This year's collection includes a series of "secret message" scarves. The weaving involves applying letters of the alphabet to the harnesses on the loom, a technique called draft-coding. A phrase is "coded" onto the loom, creating its own pattern. The energy of those words becomes incorporated into the weaving. The pattern created by the phrase, the color choices, the relationship between the various aspects of the piece, the weaving process, itself, all carry meaning, so that every scarf is an elegant and singular work of wearable art.
