My Aviaries are one-of-a-kind or limited-edition dioramas. They’re constructed with techniques learned in decades of working in theater, opera, movie special-effects, exhibition design, and industrial modelmaking. Except for vintage ephemera, antique hardware, and natural branches, I make the shadowboxes and everything in them. I’ve lived and worked in dozens of places across America, Europe, and Africa, gathering skills and materials, and exploring local histories. I enjoy the traveler's feeling of being out of time and place, an observer of the unfamiliar, when even the ordinary world seems magical. Each of my shadowboxes is a theatrical scene; the story is never about the birds, but they are your guides into my imaginary world.
